Mandela Day 2024
Mandela Day is more than just a date on the calendar for us in South Africa—it’s a call to action. It’s a day that invites us to reflect on Nelson Mandela’s legacy and embody his spirit of service, compassion, and resilience.

This year, we had the incredible opportunity to join forces with our friends, Neighbourgood and Running Late Club, to make a tangible difference in the lives of those in need. Here’s a look at how we came together to celebrate Mandela Day through a sneaker collection and clean-up initiative, culminating in a meaningful donation to The Hope Exchange.

Our Mandela Day mission was simple yet impactful: collect gently used sneakers, clean them, and donate them to those in need. With the help of Neighbourgood and Running Late Club, we reached out to our local community and beyond, gathering a fantastic collection of sneakers from generous donors who wanted to contribute to this special cause.

The response was overwhelming! From sleek running shoes to sturdy sneakers, the variety of donations showcased the kindness and generosity of our community. But collecting the sneakers was just the beginning. The real work began with our 67 minutes dedicated to cleaning these shoes for their new owners.
The cleaned sneakers were donated to The Hope Exchange. Located in Cape Town, The Hope Exchange serves as a sanctuary for homeless individuals, providing them with essential services and a glimmer of hope for a better future.

Homelessness is a complex issue, often misunderstood and judged. The Hope Exchange addresses this by offering more than just food and shelter; they provide dignity and respect to those who find themselves in difficult circumstances. They offer a place where individuals can wash their clothes, receive medical care, and access social support services—all crucial for helping them rebuild their lives and regain their self-esteem.

“Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice.”

Arriving at The Hope Exchange with our collection of cleaned sneakers, we were met with warm smiles and heartfelt thanks. It was a humbling experience to witness the direct impact of our efforts. Each pair of sneakers represented a small but meaningful gesture of solidarity and support for those who are struggling.

This collaborative effort was a reminder of the power of community and the difference we can make when we come together for a common cause.

“It is in your hands, to make a better world for all who live in it.”

Mandela Day was a success, but it also served as a reminder that acts of kindness and service should be part of our everyday lives.

At The LAB, we are inspired by Nelson Mandela’s legacy and committed to continuing our efforts to support those in need. We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to this initiative—whether by donating sneakers, lending a hand in the clean-up, or simply spreading the word. Your support made it possible for us to bring a bit of hope and dignity to those who need it most. Let’s continue to honor Nelson Mandela’s legacy through our actions and our community spirit.

Happy Mandela Day from all of us at The LAB!
